Interim Management

In times of organizational transition or turmoil, often due to the untimely, unplanned or involuntary termination of an incumbent Executive Director, Boards of Directors are increasingly open to securing interim leadership to stabilize the organization, sustain its programs and alleviate donor concerns.  Importantly, an interim leader can provide the breathing space needed to find new permanent leadership.

A full-time search process can take many months. An Interim Executive Director (ED) is able to step in immediately as the process moves along. With a focus on execution and maintenance of critical programs and processes, an Interim ED is accountable for results. Nonprofits can access this interim talent without the cost of employee benefits, contracts, severance agreements, and other benefits associated with a full time hire. Instead, the focus can be on solving challenges immediately, so the organization can concentrate on maintaining its mission focus and take the appropriate steps toward sustaining its operations and preventing further deterioration.

We have been engaged in five extended interim nonprofit Executive Director assignments in the past ten years.  In each of these engagements, we have quickly assessed organizational needs and priorities, worked with the Boards of Directors to develop an interim operating plan, and paved the way for the appointment of a full-time ED.

We are equipped and experienced in providing interim management services and open to confidential discussions with representatives of the Board of Directors or existing, in-place leadership as to how Ewing Consulting for Nonprofits can help.
